1929 Indian 101 Scout Flat Track Racer

The Indian Motorcycle Company is acknowledged world-wide for its well-crafted and highly collectible motorcycles. Many fans consider the 101 Scout to be the best of them all. The first Scouts, introduced in 1920, featured 600cc engines. Although smaller in displacement than other motorcycles at the time, they were fast, nimble, and very popular with sport riders of the day. At the time, flat track racing was also growing in popularity and the “Big Three,” Harley-Davidson, Excelsior and Indian, all sponsored riders. As flat track racing grew, new classes were added for the smaller displacement bikes. With its Scout model, Indian had a head start. In 1928, Charles Franklin, the ex-racer and “father” of the Scout, used the opportunity to tweak his original design. The result was the 101.

The new 101 featured a stronger frame, better suspension, better steering, a longer wheelbase, increased rake at the forks, a lower seat, and a 700cc/45 cubic inch motor. Flat tracker racers were especially fond of the new Scout’s handling and many 101’s enjoyed lengthy racing careers. Introduced in 1928, the 010 Scout fell victim to the Great Depression and production was ceased just four years later.

This 1929 Indian 101 Scout was stripped down for flat track racing, including the fitting of a lightweight spool front hub. The fact that there are no serial numbers on the cases may indicate this Scout was destined for Indian’s racing team.

Originally part of a large Indian collection in Ohio, this Scout has been completely and accurately restored. In 1970 it was purchased by a Japanese collector who took it home and put it on display. It returned from Japan in 1996 in a transaction that brought 40 Indian motorcycles back to the U.S. Later that year it was purchased by motorcycle collector and Custom Chrome (CCI) founder Nace Panzica. It has recently undergone a meticulous detailing at Canepa Design and is now ready for display.
